Well, we are off to Lake Tahoe tomorrow. It will be a long driving day with an interesting drive between the desert floor and the 11 mountain passes to traverse along the way. Needless to say, I think we will drive separately. We have been at Great Basin NP for the last 3 days. What a different environment and scenery than where we came from in Colorado. The Great Basin stretches from the California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, through most of Nevada, to Utah’s Wasatch mountains. It is HUGE! The G...

Rocky Mountain NP We are once again back to one of our “happy places”! We love Rocky Mountain National Park! This is our third trip back to the park, as we travel further west to California. We have stayed on the Estes Park side in a cabin years ago, before we had our camper, and that was terrific. There is so much to see and do in that area. The little town is awesome, and if you’re a Stephen King fan, the Stanley Hotel in Estes is where some of the scenes of his famous movie “The Shining...
We have had the pleasure of exploring some more of God’s wonderful creation while in the road. We spent three full days roaming around in the main sections of Yosemite National Park. We’ve gone from the Yosemite Valley & Village area, to Glacier Point (elevation 7200’), to driving Tioga Pass (elevation 9943’). Oh the views, & each area, special with its own unique beauty! This place has been on our list for a while now… Thankful we were able to see it this year!
I’ve heard about the Columbia River Gorge & all of the waterfalls for years, but I had no idea just how long the gorge was! It’s over 90 miles! The most scenic areas are along the old Highway 30 Scenic Drive, where beautiful, huge waterfalls and hiking trails abound… On the river, you will find all kinds of water activities, if that’s your thing. In addition, there are countless Oregon State Parks all along the Gorge area. We camped at one of those State Parks along the river. Memaloose Stat...
I’ve just got to say…..Horseshoe Bend Campground, is the most isolated place, with such a vast beautiful scenery, we’ve ever camped in! We typically camp in RV or state parks. We try to get full hookups or at least water & electric. This place, believe it or not, has a small section of full hookups which are reservable. Bingo! It truly was an amazing experience! The sites were large, & you totally felt like you just had space to just be…. When you add that to the gorgeous Big Horn Canyon...
My husband, Steve & I, are making a big trip out west this year, after a lengthy time away from traveling, due to the Covid pandemic. We know you understand, as everyone’s lives have been affected during this scary & uncertain time. I wish I could say the threat is over, but it seems as though we will be dealing with this on some level, for a some time to come. So…we decided to just get back out there, and be as safe as we could, while continuing to explore & live our lives. We have ...

There’s something extra sweet about spending Christmas outdoors with the family. Maybe it’s the crisp air, or maybe it’s the way the kids bounce out of their sleeping bags a little faster when they know hot cocoa is waiting by the fire. Either way, a Christmas camping trip has a way of bringing everyone together without all the usual holiday chaos. You don’t need much to make camp feel festive. A strand of battery lights hung between trees, a tiny tabletop tree, and a few handmade ornaments from...
Cold-weather camping has a special kind of magic Think quiet forests, crisp air, and the satisfying crunch of frost under your boots. But it also has a ruthless way of exposing every piece of gear you cheaped out on. Nothing teaches faster than a night below freezing in the wrong equipment. I've identified three big regrets almost every winter camper wishes they’d fixed before stepping onto the trail. The Gore-Tex You Told Yourself You Didn’t Need You know that moment: freezing rain turns to sle...
There’s something refreshing, almost restorative, about bringing Thanksgiving out of the dining room and into the open air. For campers and outdoor lovers, celebrating the holiday at a campsite blends tradition with the invigorating benefits of nature. Fresh air sharpens the appetite, lifts the mood, and makes every familiar ritual feel a little more vibrant. Cooking outdoors becomes part of the adventure. Dutch-oven stuffing simmering over coals, roasted root vegetables, or even a camp-friendly...
If you live in Colorado, chances are your group chats, social feeds, and late-night drives have had a single theme this week: “the northern lights” or Aurora Borealis. A rare and powerful series of solar storms lit up our skies for three incredible nights, turning the State and the Front Range where I live into an impromptu aurora-watching festival. And for those of us in Boulder, it felt almost surreal—like the sky was auditioning for a cosmic art show. I spent the second night of the storm in ...
Across campsites and forest trails, a quiet revolution is reshaping the way people eat outdoors. Sustainable camping, once focused mainly on reusable gear and leave-no-trace ethics, now extends to the campfire kitchen, where responsibly sourced foods are taking center stage. Outdoor recreation often has a big impact on the environment. It doesn’t have to be that way. More campers are trading in freeze-dried meals and plastic-wrapped snacks for local produce, ethically raised meats, and homemade ...
