Tucked into the quiet residential neighborhoods of northeast Boulder, known as Gunbarrel, Twin Lakes Open Space is a local gem that blends everyday convenience with a true sense of wild Colorado beauty. For those of us lucky enough to live nearby, it’s a go-to spot for a morning dog walk, an after-work run, or simply a slow stroll to reset the day. With two sparkling lakes, originally created for water storage for agricultural use offer mountain views, and a surprising variety of wildlife, it feels like stepping into a nature preserve right in the middle of town.

Wildlife Around Every Corner

The charm of Twin Lakes is in the life it supports. Look closely along the shoreline and you’ll often spot turtles sunning themselves on logs or rocks. Birders will find plenty to enjoy here—great blue herons, red-winged blackbirds, and the occasional ospreys and bald eagles make appearances, while ducks and geese are a daily fixture. If you’re walking at a quieter time, you might catch sight of rabbits darting through the tall grasses or coyotes and foxes in the fields.

Due to the abundance of berry bushes and a few wild apple trees along the trail to Twin Lakes in Fall it’s possible to catch sight of a bear or two, even 9 miles east of the Foothills. It’s also not rare in springtime to see a momma bear with their cubs. Animals use paths, and the way east from the Foothills and the mountain area of Boulder to the county has plenty of paths, open space, waterways, and forested areas. It’s a reminder that even in a residential areas, nature thrives when given space.

A Path for Everyone

The loop trail circling the lakes is flat, dirt, easy, and welcoming for all ages and activity levels. Families with strollers, cyclists on a quick ride, and runners putting in their training miles all share the crushed gravel paths. For dog owners, it’s a paradise—many bring their pups for a lap around the lakes the West Lake path is off leash while the East Lake path is has a leash requirement. For 8 years, my rescued Black Lab Hunter and I circled the Lakes on at least one walk at 6 am and many times a visit later in the day. No matter the pace or time of the day, the trail always offers broad views of the Flatirons to the west and wide skies that shift colors with the time of day.

From Trail to Tap

One of the great perks of Twin Lakes is its location. After a walk or run, it’s just a short drive (or bike ride) down the road to Avery Brewing Company. Grabbing a pint of White Rascal or one of Avery’s seasonal brews feels like the perfect cap to time spent outdoors. It’s a Boulder-style ritual—fresh air, a bit of exercise, and a craft beer to celebrate.

Why It’s a Favorite

Twin Lakes Open Space is more than just a trail; it’s a slice of everyday nature in the middle of a busy community. Whether you’re out for fitness, dog-walking, wildlife spotting, or simply taking a break from the rush, it delivers a little bit of everything. For many locals, it’s a daily touchpoint with the outdoors—proof that you don’t have to go far to enjoy Boulder’s natural beauty.
